
Making your own deodorant can be surprisingly simple, but a good DIY recipe needs to do more than smell pleasant. Underarm skin is sensitive, essential oils can cause irritation when they are too concentrated, baking soda does not agree with everyone, and any recipe containing water raises preservation questions that many homemade deodorant tutorials completely ignore.
There is also an important distinction between deodorant and antiperspirant.
Deodorant is intended to help manage or mask body odor. Antiperspirant reduces the amount you sweat. In the United States, products that reduce perspiration are regulated differently because antiperspirants affect a body function.
The DIY recipes in this article are deodorants, not antiperspirants. You should still expect to sweat while wearing them.
That is normal. Sweat itself plays an important role in temperature regulation, and body odor develops largely through the interaction between sweat and microorganisms living on the skin.
The goal here is therefore not to “detox” your armpits, block sweat glands, or promise 72-hour protection. It is to create simple, pleasantly scented underarm products using ingredients such as arrowroot, plant butters, baking soda or magnesium hydroxide, carrier oils, and carefully diluted essential oils.
πΏ Before You Make Homemade Deodorant
Underarms deserve gentler essential-oil concentrations than many general body products.
The Tisserand Institute places deodorants and other sensitive-area cosmetics in roughly the 0.5% to 1.2% essential-oil range, depending on the oil, individual, and formulation.
The recipes below therefore stay around 0.5% to 1% total essential oil.
More essential oil does not automatically make a better deodorant.
Higher concentrations increase the likelihood of:
- Burning
- Redness
- Itching
- Dryness
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Sensitization
This is especially important because deodorant is generally applied repeatedly to the same small area.
If you have very reactive skin, make the recipes fragrance-free first. Essential oils are optional.

π§ Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant
Homemade deodorant is not a reliable way to stop perspiration.
Ingredients such as arrowroot may absorb some moisture and improve the dry feel of a product, but that is not the same thing as reducing sweat production.
Antiperspirants use regulated active ingredientsβmost commonly aluminum saltsβto reduce perspiration at the application site.
That means a jar of coconut oil, arrowroot, and lavender may smell pleasant and help you feel fresher, but you should not expect it to keep your underarms completely dry.
If excessive sweating is significantly affecting your life, it may be worth discussing it with a dermatologist rather than repeatedly increasing the strength of a DIY deodorant.
π¦ Why Do Armpits Smell?
Fresh sweat is not necessarily the odor you associate with sweaty underarms.
Body odor develops as sweat and skin secretions interact with microorganisms living on the skin.
That is why deodorants can approach odor in several ways. A formula might contain fragrance to cover unpleasant odor, powders to improve moisture feel, or ingredients that change the environment where odor-producing microorganisms thrive.
Commercial deodorant formulation is considerably more sophisticated than mixing a few pantry ingredients together, however.
A homemade deodorant may work wonderfully for one person and poorly for another.
Treat these recipes as starting points rather than guaranteed all-day formulas.
βοΈ Why These Recipes Use Grams
If you have a small digital scale, use it.
Essential-oil drops are not standardized. Drop size varies according to the bottle insert, temperature, viscosity, and essential oil.
Percentages and grams are much more reliable.
For a 50-gram deodorant:
- 0.25 g essential oil = 0.5%
- 0.5 g essential oil = 1%
If your scale cannot accurately measure fractions of a gram, make a larger batch or use the essential-oil supplier’s own weight information rather than assuming that every bottle produces the same size drop.
π Easy Essential Oil Blends for Deodorant
Keep underarm fragrance simple.
Good starting combinations include:
- Lavender + cedarwood
- Lavender + patchouli
- Lavender + tea tree
- Geranium + cedarwood
- Sweet orange + cedarwood
For example, if a recipe calls for 0.5 g total essential oil, you could use roughly two parts lavender to one part cedarwood.
You do not need six or seven oils in one deodorant.
I would also avoid loading an everyday underarm product with particularly intense oils such as cinnamon bark, clove, oregano, or lemongrass. Several have much lower recommended dermal maximums and are more likely to irritate sensitive skin.
π§΄ Recipe #1: Simple Essential Oil Deodorant Cream
This is the easiest place to begin.
The formula contains a modest amount of baking soda rather than making sodium bicarbonate the majority of the recipe.
Ingredients
- 15 g shea butter
- 10 g coconut oil
- 18 g arrowroot powder
- 6.5 g baking soda
- 0.5 g essential oil or essential-oil blend
Total: 50 g
How to Make It
Melt the shea butter and coconut oil gently using a double-boiler setup.
Remove from heat.
Whisk in the arrowroot powder and baking soda until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined.
Allow it to cool until it is warm rather than hot, then stir in the essential oil.
Transfer the mixture to a clean, dry jar.
Allow it to cool completely before closing the lid.
How to Use It
Start with a very small amountβroughly a pea-sized quantity divided between both underarms.
Massage it onto clean, dry skin.
If it feels greasy, you are probably using too much.
A Good Scent Combination
Try:
- 2 parts lavender
- 1 part cedarwood
Lavender provides the softer floral-herbal note while cedarwood gives the fragrance a dry woody base.
πΏ What Does Baking Soda Do in Deodorant?
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, appears in many homemade deodorants because it can help with odor.
But it is also alkaline.
Underarm skin can be sensitive, and some people find baking-soda deodorants irritating, particularly with frequent use.
If you develop:
- Redness
- Itching
- Burning
- Peeling
- Tenderness
- A persistent rash
stop using the product.
Do not assume that irritation means your armpits are “detoxing.”
A rash is a sign that your skin is unhappy.
Try the baking-soda-free recipe instead.
π± Recipe #2: Baking-Soda-Free Deodorant Cream
If conventional DIY deodorants make your underarms sting or turn red, leaving out the baking soda may help.
This version uses magnesium hydroxide and arrowroot instead.
Ingredients
- 15 g shea butter
- 10 g fractionated coconut oil
- 18.25 g arrowroot powder
- 6.5 g magnesium hydroxide powder
- 0.25 g essential oil
Total: 50 g
The essential-oil concentration here is only 0.5%, making this the lowest-fragrance recipe in the collection.
How to Make It
Melt the shea butter gently.
Remove it from heat and stir in the fractionated coconut oil.
Whisk in the arrowroot and magnesium hydroxide a little at a time.
Once the mixture is smooth and has cooled considerably, stir in the essential oil.
Transfer it to a clean, dry jar.
The final texture should be a soft cream or balm.
Scent Idea
Try:
- Lavender
- Cedarwood
or simply use:
- Lavender alone
You can also make this completely fragrance-free.
That may actually be the best choice if you have previously reacted to scented deodorants.
πΈ Fragrance-Free Is Still a Valid DIY Deodorant
An essential-oil website might seem like a strange place to recommend leaving out the essential oils.
But sometimes that is the right answer.
Fragrance is a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and essential oils contain naturally occurring fragrance compounds.
If you regularly experience itchy or irritated underarms, adding another essential oil may not improve the situation.
Make the base without fragrance and see how your skin responds.
If you later want aroma, introduce a very small amount rather than starting with a heavily scented product.
π§Ό Recipe #3: Firm Essential Oil Deodorant Stick
If you dislike dipping your fingers into a jar, a solid stick is more convenient.
Beeswax provides firmness, while shea butter and coconut oil help the stick glide over the skin.
Ingredients
- 8 g beeswax
- 10 g shea butter
- 10 g coconut oil
- 13 g arrowroot powder
- 8.5 g magnesium hydroxide powder
- 0.5 g essential oil or essential-oil blend
Total: 50 g
How to Make It
Place the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil in a heat-safe container.
Warm them gently over a double boiler until completely melted.
Remove from heat.
Slowly whisk in the arrowroot and magnesium hydroxide.
Continue stirring as the mixture begins to cool.
When it is still liquid but no longer very hot, add the essential oil and stir thoroughly.
Pour into a clean deodorant tube or push-up container.
Allow it to harden completely before using.
Adjusting the Texture
Homemade sticks are sensitive to room temperature.
If the finished stick is too soft, remelt it and add a little more beeswax.
If it is uncomfortably hard, remelt it and replace a small portion of the wax with additional coconut oil or shea butter.
Make small changes.
One or two grams can noticeably alter a 50-gram batch.
π³ Scent Idea: Lavender Woods
For a soft woody deodorant, try a blend based on:
- Lavender
- Cedarwood
You can also use a small amount of patchouli if you enjoy earthy fragrance.
Patchouli is powerful, so let it remain the smallest part of the aromatic blend.

Remember that diffuser ratios are not automatically skin-safe ratios. Use the deodorant’s total essential-oil percentage as your safety limit rather than copying the concentration of a room-diffuser blend.
πΌ Recipe #4: Low-Baking-Soda Cocoa Butter Deodorant Stick
This version uses cocoa butter for additional firmness and a naturally warm aroma.
It contains baking soda, but it is not built around an enormous quantity of it.
Ingredients
- 8 g beeswax
- 10 g cocoa butter
- 10 g shea butter
- 15.5 g arrowroot powder
- 6 g baking soda
- 0.5 g essential oil or essential-oil blend
Total: 50 g
How to Make It
Melt the beeswax, cocoa butter, and shea butter together gently.
Remove from heat and gradually whisk in the arrowroot and baking soda.
Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
Add the essential oil and stir thoroughly.
Pour into a clean deodorant container and allow it to set completely.
Scent Idea: Soft Floral Woods
Try:
- 2 parts lavender
- 1 part cedarwood
The cocoa butter already has its own subtle aroma, so you may find that a very simple essential-oil combination is all you need.
π Will DIY Deodorant Stain Clothes?
It can.
Oil-based formulas may transfer onto clothing if too much is applied.
Powders can also leave visible residue on dark fabric.
Use a thin layer and give the product a moment to settle before dressing.
If staining is a major concern, test the recipe while wearing an older shirt before using it with clothing you care about.
Reducing the amount applied often solves more problems than reformulating the entire recipe.
π¨ Recipe #5: Water-Free Essential Oil Deodorant Spray
Many DIY deodorant spray recipes combine:
- Water
- Witch hazel
- Essential oils
and stop there.
I do not recommend that approach.
Essential oils do not properly dissolve in plain water, and once water enters a homemade cosmetic formula, microbial preservation becomes an important issue.
Instead, this simple spray contains no water.
It is best thought of as a lightly scented underarm oil spray rather than a heavy-duty deodorant.
Ingredients
- 49.6 g fractionated coconut oil
- 0.4 g essential oil or essential-oil blend
Total: 50 g
This gives an essential-oil concentration of approximately 0.8%.
How to Make It
Add the fractionated coconut oil to a clean, completely dry bottle designed to spray lightweight oils.
Add the essential oil.
Close and shake.
Because there is no water, you avoid the preservative problem associated with homemade water-based sprays.
How to Use It
Apply a very small amount to clean, dry underarms.
Massage it in if necessary.
Allow it to absorb before dressing.
This recipe is intentionally light and simple. Its primary contribution is fragrance, so do not expect it to perform like a commercially formulated deodorant or antiperspirant.
If you need stronger odor control, one of the powder-containing cream or stick formulas will probably be a better place to experiment.
π« Why I Don’t Recommend a Basic Water + Essential Oil Deodorant Spray
Water-based cosmetics need more thought than most DIY recipes acknowledge.
A bottle containing water, aloe, hydrosol, or witch hazel can support microbial growth depending on its complete composition.
Adding essential oil does not automatically preserve it.
Neither does shaking the bottle before use.
And essential oil floating on top of water is not properly diluted merely because the bottle contains a large amount of water.
A professionally formulated aqueous deodorant may use:
- A solubilizer
- A broad-spectrum preservative
- Controlled pH
- Stability testing
- Microbial testing
That is very different from pouring lavender into a bottle of tap water.
If you want to formulate preserved water-based cosmetics at home, learn cosmetic formulation and preservation as its own skill rather than relying on a simple kitchen recipe.
π§½ Keep Your Homemade Deodorant Clean
The creams and sticks above are essentially water-free, which simplifies preservation considerably.
Still, good hygiene matters.
Use:
- Clean utensils
- Clean containers
- Dry hands
- Dry scoops or spatulas
Do not repeatedly introduce shower water into a jar.
If a homemade product changes dramatically in odor, color, or appearance, discard it.
Small batches are useful because you can make fresh product periodically instead of storing a huge jar for months.
πͺ Don’t Apply Essential-Oil Deodorant Immediately After Shaving
Freshly shaved underarms can be more vulnerable to irritation.
A product that feels completely comfortable on intact skin may sting immediately after shaving.
Baking soda, fragrance compounds, alcohol-containing products, and essential oils can all become much more noticeable on recently shaved or already irritated skin.
If your deodorant burns, wash it off.
Burning is not evidence that the product is “working.”
π©Ή Patch-Test New Deodorant
Before covering both underarms with a new recipe, test a small quantity first.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends testing new skincare products on a small area repeatedly for several days before adopting them more broadly.
That isn’t a perfect guarantee against future allergy, but it can reveal obvious irritation before you apply the product to a larger sensitive area.
If you develop a rash, stop using the product.
Possible culprits can include:
- Essential oils
- Fragrance
- Baking soda
- Beeswax
- Plant butters
- Another ingredient in the formula
“Natural” products can still cause contact dermatitis.
πΏ Is Tea Tree Oil Good for Deodorant?
Tea tree frequently appears in natural deodorant formulas because of its aroma and antimicrobial activity.
But tea tree oil is not automatically harmless.
Like other essential oils, it can irritate skin or cause allergic contact dermatitis, particularly as it ages and oxidizes.
If you use it, keep the overall essential-oil concentration low and store the bottle properly.
You do not need tea tree oil for a deodorant to be successful.
Lavender and cedarwood may create a more pleasant everyday fragrance if odor masking is your main goal.
π Can I Use Citrus Essential Oils?
You can formulate with some citrus oils, but the exact oil matters.
Certain expressed citrus oils can be phototoxic when applied to skin at sufficiently high concentrations.
Sweet orange is generally a simpler choice than strongly phototoxic citrus oils, but oxidation and skin sensitivity are still considerations.
Because deodorant is a leave-on product used every day, I prefer uncomplicated underarm blends rather than filling a recipe with many citrus oils.
If you do use citrus, keep the total essential-oil concentration low and confirm the safety information for the exact oil you own.
πΆοΈ Oils I Would Avoid in Everyday DIY Deodorant
Underarm skin is not the place to showcase every powerful essential oil in your collection.
I would be especially cautious with oils such as:
- Cinnamon bark
- Cassia
- Clove
- Oregano
- Lemongrass
These can have comparatively restrictive dermal limits or greater irritation potential.
An essential oil does not need to feel hot, tingly, or medicinal to be useful in a deodorant.
In fact, a product you barely notice on your skin is usually preferable.
πΈ Essential Oils Are Primarily Fragrance Here
Essential oils are often promoted in DIY deodorants with claims such as:
- “Kills all odor-causing bacteria”
- “Detoxifies your armpits”
- “Balances hormones”
- “Pulls toxins from lymph nodes”
- “Prevents disease”
Those claims are unnecessary.
In these recipes, essential oils are primarily there to provide fragrance.
Some essential oils have documented antimicrobial activity under particular experimental conditions, but that does not mean a 1% homemade lavender deodorant should be presented as a medical or disinfecting treatment.
A pleasant-smelling cosmetic can simply be a pleasant-smelling cosmetic.
πΏ A Deodorant Won’t Replace Washing
Deodorant works best as part of ordinary hygiene.
Apply it to clean, dry underarms.
Putting more and more deodorant over yesterday’s product and sweat can eventually create buildup on the skin and clothing.
Wash normally, dry thoroughly, and then apply a small amount.
If persistent body odor suddenly changes significantly despite normal hygiene, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
π§΄ Coconut Oil Isn’t an Antiperspirant
Coconut oil appears in homemade deodorant because it makes an easy balm base.
It melts readily, spreads well, and combines conveniently with powders.
It does not stop sweat glands from functioning.
The same goes for:
- Shea butter
- Cocoa butter
- Arrowroot
- Essential oils
If your priority is preventing visible perspiration, a DIY deodorant may simply be the wrong type of product.
A conventional antiperspirant is designed for that purpose.
π½ What Does Arrowroot Do?
Arrowroot gives creams and sticks a drier, less greasy feel.
Powders such as arrowroot, cornstarch, tapioca starch, and silica are commonly used in deodorant-type products to improve feel and absorb some surface moisture.
That does not turn them into antiperspirants.
Think of arrowroot as a texture and moisture-management ingredient rather than a sweat-gland blocker.
If you don’t have arrowroot, tapioca starch can sometimes provide a similar cosmetic role, although texture will differ.
π§ What If Coconut Oil Melts?
Virgin coconut oil melts relatively easily in warm temperatures.
That means a deodorant cream may become much softer during summer.
A stick containing beeswax is generally more temperature-resistant.
If your cream melts, you can stir it and allow it to resolidify in a cooler location.
If you live somewhere consistently warm, increase the proportion of solid butter or beeswax in future batches rather than storing an extremely soft product in a deodorant tube.
π‘οΈ Don’t Leave DIY Deodorant in a Hot Car
A stick containing coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax can turn into a liquid inside a hot vehicle.
Store homemade deodorant somewhere reasonably cool.
Travel jars are often safer than twist-up tubes if you know the product will experience significant heat.
If you want a genuinely heat-stable commercial-style stick, cosmetic formulation becomes more complicated than the basic DIY recipes in this article.
πΆ Essential Oil Deodorant for Children and Teens
Young children generally do not need fragranced underarm products designed for adults.
For older children and teenagers who begin experiencing body odor, keep products simple and gentle.
A fragrance-free commercial deodorant may be a better starting point than a homemade formula containing multiple essential oils.
If you do formulate for a younger person, age-specific essential-oil safety matters, and adult concentrations should not automatically be copied.
π€° Using DIY Deodorant During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can change fragrance sensitivity, and not every essential oil has equally strong pregnancy-specific safety information.
If you already tolerate an unscented base, using it fragrance-free is the simplest option.
If you want essential oils, choose them conservatively and consider the specific oil rather than assuming every “natural deodorant” ingredient is automatically appropriate.

π When to Stop Using Homemade Deodorant
Stop using a recipe if your underarms become:
- Persistently itchy
- Red
- Swollen
- Painful
- Cracked
- Blistered
- Intensely dry
- Burning or stinging
Don’t keep applying the deodorant hoping your skin will “adjust.”
If symptoms are significant, persistent, or repeatedly return with different products, a dermatologist can help determine whether you have irritant or allergic contact dermatitis.
Sometimes the best deodorant recipe for sensitive skin is simply a fragrance-free commercial product formulated and tested specifically for that purpose.
π§ͺ Homemade Doesn’t Mean Tested
These are small-batch DIY formulas intended for personal experimentation.
They are not substitutes for professionally tested cosmetic formulations.
Commercial products may undergo:
- Stability testing
- Microbial testing
- Packaging compatibility testing
- Safety assessment
- Preservative efficacy testing
- Consumer testing
If you plan to sell homemade deodorant rather than make it for yourself, formulation and regulatory requirements become much more important.
A recipe suitable for one jar in your own bathroom is not automatically ready for commercial production.
πΏ Which DIY Deodorant Recipe Should You Try First?

A deodorant does not need a powerful fragrance, a dozen essential oils, or a burning sensation to be effective enough for your needs.
The best DIY formula is the one your skin actually tolerates.
